Flegga Lakes Hike
Overview
Come along with us on a scenic hike to the stunning twin lakes of Flegga. These natural wonders sit high in the alpine meadows, separated by a mountain ridge that divides Ioannina and Grevena. Flega, the highest peak of the Valia Calda National Forest at 2,159 meters, towers over the lakes.
The peaceful lakes are just 100 meters apart and connect to each other, with the lower lake spilling into the Arkoudorema of Valia Calda. As we hike, we will encounter towering Black Pines and centuries-old White Pines, some of which have been struck by lightning.
Keep an eye out for the rare alpine newt that call these lakes home. Our route is gentle, without any steep points or significant altitude differences, making it suitable for hikers of all levels. The view of the artificial lake of Aoos from the top is breathtaking.
After reaching the top, we will make our way down to the two lakes to take in their beauty. Our return trip will follow the same path back to our starting point above the Mavrovouni refuge.
