Necromanteion of Acheron Culture tour
Overview
The village of Mesopotamos, located 48km NW of Preveza, is home to the oldest Necromanteion of antiquity, the Nekromanteio (Necromancer) of Acheron, which dates back to the ancient Mycenaean colony of Ephyra (14th-13th century BC).
The Nekromanteio was believed to be the entrance to the kingdom of Hades, the underworld, and people from all over the world visited this unique oracle to communicate with their loved ones.
According to legend, the hearse Hermes led souls to Hades through Lake Acherousia, which was connected to the river Acheron, the way Charon led the souls to the lake.
At the confluence of the Kokytos and Acheron rivers, on the northwest bank of Acherousia, they established the most important place of worship of the gods of the Underworld and communication with the souls of the dead, the Acheron Necromancy.
In these places of myth and history, Charon tirelessly transports souls, uniting the world of the dead with the world of the living as visitors can explore and immerse themselves in the incredible history and legends of this enchanting location.
